Security Gateway Module (SGM/ SGW) | Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep
The SGM / SGW (Security Gateway Module) is a module whose function is to keep the communication networks secure. SGM addresses two main security vulnerabilities in the vehicle, the DLC connector and the Radio, through which a hacker could get unauthorized access to the vehicle by separating them from the rest of the network. When a technician diagnoses a vehicle, his scanner will transmit a certain authorization key, and if SGM will recognize it, it will allow a more advanced level of diagnostics, like clear DTCs, perform actuator tests, special functions, ECU configuration, flashing, or module resets on the private side of the network. If it will not recognize it, it will allow for a passive diagnostics, like reading codes and sometimes observing live data.
As of now, the only way to get an authorized full access to a whole vehicle through an OBD2 port is via using an official Chrysler wiTECH 2.0 subscription with either the Micropod II or a J2534 device.
If you don’t have an active subscription with Chrysler, don’t lose heart! Autel provides an alternative using their “chrysler 12+8 adapter”. You would have to find a location of the SGM, disconnect it, and connect their adapter instead which will unlock the full access to the vehicle network.

SGM has been implemented in some 2018 Chrysler vehicles (Dodge, Jeep, Alfa Romeo) and all 2019+ models.
